Role Playing Games, also known as RPG’s for short. The first and most influential of the role-playing game genre is Dungeons and Dragons. Developed in the 1970s by Gary Gygax the game has expanded into the world of films, TV and novels.
The game is played by a group of people, one of whom is known as the Dungeon Master. It is up to the Dungeon Master to control the narrative of the game, or adventure and to steer the direction of the experience. The remaining gamers listen to the Dungeon Master’s story and descriptions and have their “characters” react accordingly to the situations and events. The characters experience combat and puzzle situations and upon successful resolutions gain their characters experience points. Increasingly gaining experience points makes the character more powerful and effective within the game. Some characters are skilled in combat, both melee and ranged and some characters use “magic” skills. Interestingly the inclusion of this arcane content within the game was controversial amongst many religious groups during the mid 1980s and brought the playing hobby into the news media.
Aspects the chance and combat are resolved within the game by the use of special gaming dice. Typically, 4,6,8,12 and 20 sided dice. Often players have their own “lucky” dice and shakers and will bring their own to the gaming session. The rpg gaming genre expanded rapidly from the mid 1980s into science fiction and other fantasy worlds.
Notable games were “Traveler” and Games Workshop’s “Warhammer” Today “Warhammer” and it’s science fiction counter-part “Warhammer 40K” are the dominant table-top gaming products. All these games use dice as the deciding game-mechanic for randomizing combat, character generation and descision making.
